CHILDREN ARE SUPPORTED

TO GET BACK TO LEARNING IN

KYAKA II REFUGEE SETTLEMENT

BRIDGE TO FORMAL SCHOOLING

The Bridge to Formal Schooling project in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement to support children to access education education.

The project builds strong foundations in literarcy and numeracy through a 6-month fast-track, using the Teaching at the Right Level Africa methodology to meet each learner where they are. For children from French and Swahili-speaking countries such as DR Congo, Burundi and Rwanda, this support is especially vital in preparing them to transition into Uganda’s English-based curriculum. They are first taught in their mother tongue while gradually transitioning to the English and Ugandan school system through participatory and play-oriented curriculum.

Teaching At The Right Level (TARL) is an evidence-based approach that builds foundational skills by grouping children according to their learning level instead of age or grade.

CATCH UP

Catch-Up, supported by Education Cannot Wait, is implemented in 10 primary and 2 secondary schools in Kyaka II. Learners who are behind in literacy and numeracy are assessed and supported through daily, level-based group sessions held before and after regular classes. Teachers help children strengthen their foundational skills, catch up, and regain confidence in the classroom.

SECONDARY LANGUAGE BRIDGING

The Secondary Language Bridging project is supported by

Education Cannot Wait, and implemented at Bukere and Bujubuli Secondary Schools in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement. Learners who are behind in English are assessed and supported through daily, level-based group sessions held after regular classes, using the Theme-Based Approach.

This approach targets learners in S1 and S2, helping them build foundational English skills so they can catch up with their peers. The Theme-Based Approach aligns with the Ugandan curriculum and incorporates interactive activities designed to make learning more engaging and effective.

Together, these educational programs have supported over 15,000 children in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement to return to learning since 2020, using the Teaching at the Right Level approach
